Spitfire Mk.VIII G-RAAF

Hi All,

I just noticed that spitfire G-RAAF has been logged by someone who ownes a Mode S receiver.
Does anybody know which spitfire this is? and are there any pictures of spitfire around?

Cheers,

Niels

Hello,

May be wrong here and hoping that Mark12 will be able to assist on this one, would not the merlin 45 have a smaller engine bearer and cowlings more suited to the MkV than the merlin 66 which was originally fitted to the MkVIIII which I believe had a slightly longer bearer and cowlings.

Jason

I think the owner, at that time, had a Merlin 45 either secured or in sight and proposed to fit it to a ‘long’ engine bearer if he could not obtain a Merlin 66.

^^ Sometimes it’s just a case of make do with what you’ve got. 🙂

Wow Mark, this Peter Arnold character seems to rival you for his knowledge of Supermarine’s finest! 😉

I do hope the aircraft will reappear in RAAF colours as I imagine such an “exotic” variation would be welcomed on the UK scene.

Careful what you wish for, you might get a shark’s mouth!

JF872, test-flown by Leif Lundsten at RAF Worthy Down, August or September 1943.

….“The identity JF872 has been provisionally allocated to a project which is in the early stages of reconstruction to flying condition by Neil Dykes at Hawarden near Chester. The components, including a firewall top section bearing the c/n 6S-196056, were recovered from Oakey in Queensland and passed through several owners before arriving in the U.K. with MA863 (q.v.) and becoming the property of Guy Black in July 1998.

On the basis of known serial and c/n tie-ups Peter Arnold has been able to suggest a list of thirteen aircraft that the parts may have come from and JF872 / A58-328 was chosen as a representative identity. The project was registered G-RAAF on 22 April 2009 and is currently projected to be powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin 45 unless the owners can obtain a suitable Merlin66″.
