Spitfire Mk VIII panel light

Spitfire Mk VIII pilots notes show this D shaped light cover….this is a new one to me, does anyone recognise it ?

Any ideas on the 5C/ number or at least a picture, would be most helpful.

TIA

Cheers Mike

From the Lens shape it looks like an early 5C/1069 “Half-twist to remove lens” Warning lamp.
This lamp has a bakelite body and screw-on ferrule; and is fitted with a stepped metal lens cap. (See Below.)

No idea what dimming screen it used; but it is not the one fitted on the slightly later 5C/1069, which was the same pattern as the 5C/1635 series Warning lamps. The dimming screen fitted to these later lamps was a 5C/2080.

Hi Tony, that photo is the one I was trying to describe !

We just have to track down a straight sided cover.

I would say its probably a straight sided L shaped bracket with the bulb holder through it holding it to the panel and shaped around the bulb holder, on the right angled protruding face it has a spring hinge across it and a curved to the shape of the lamp filter housing that folds across the light forming a glorified u section. is that lip at the bottom of the lampholder curving round not the base of it?

Thank you to all who replied , Air Ministry you touch on what I suspect (But cannot prove) that the touch up artist has assumed a shape .

This is a possibility as the circular lamp cover goes down to a small neck towards the hinge which is almost as wide as the cover, a poor quality or dark photo my lead

the viewer to think the sides are straight not circular.

Here is the other side of the panel with….

There’s just so many of those indicator lamps and with most cockpit photos in the PNs being so heavily touched up, it can be impossible to say which is what just by squinting at the page.

Here’s the only helpful contribution I can make:-

I know that there are several types of light with different shaped covers although circular. Perhaps this is one that is not generally known.
