Hiya, quick question. My friend has been asked to build a 1:32 scale MkI Spitfire for somebody. There are 2 kits available – Revell (MkI/II) and Hasegawa (MkII) (the second probably being the best).
So, the question is, what external / visible differences are there between the two aircraft? I seem to think there is none / very little – but this isn’t really my area. Any ideas chaps / esses?

Yes the Coffman Starter unique to Merlin on Mk II – sorry about that. The prop needs a bit more research. DH metal props on Mk I and broad root Dowty-Rotol wood blades on a percentage of Mk V. On Mk II it seems, from period photos, to suggest that some were with DH blades and some were on early wooden blades from D-R with a blade profile similar to the Mk IX four blade unit. I believe this is why we see the variation in spinner length as mentioned by Daz. Of course period pics can be deceptive because they disproportionally relate to experimental work.

Hmm. We can get an add on ‘bulge’ for the Coffman, but I assume that’s for the MkII – in which case the removal of that would suffice for a MkI. Spinners – presumably, depending on the kit’s quality, some sanding and filing could solve that. Good show chaps!

The Mk II in Ottawa P8332 is not really a good example to make a comparison. During it’s ‘Ground Instructiuonal’ life time in Canada it has had a succession of non standard and rather strange looking three blade propellers and ad hoc spinners. Some blades, over diameter, others broad and chunky. It seems currently to be fitted with a Hamilton Standard unit!!

Spitfire MkII “should” also have a blunter spinner profile, too, I think.
I say “should” because the MkIIB in Canada has a pointy, MkV-type spinner.
Probably wrong, of course!
