According to BBC news this aircraft has just been loaded up and moved from Manchester Museum of Science and Industry and is on its way to London.

Hint to the RAF Museum hierarchy – it would look rather spiffing in a postwar silver scheme.

Omg!! Those codes look white!!
Not to mention the post 1947 Bright Red and Bright Blue roundel colours (that’s Post Office/Cherry Red and Roundel Blue in modern BS381c speak)…

Hope none of you have an AX-E to grind!

A-XT (which, of course, is 603 Sqn’s codes).

Hi
Bruce I think your 150% right on that one.
Does the RAFM only have the paint stencils for AX these days? I ask this as I recall the MkXVI RW393 being marked up as AX-T when it was at Cosford during the 1990’s.
Regards
Jason

It’s not a hoax, Bruce.

Presumably it went indoors at Cosford some time in the early 1970s? I can remember seeing it there in 1976.

I just love this forum because it adds subsequent very illuminatory posts like these to what might be the initial anodyne. Thank you Duxman. Made my day.

With pictures of a certain silver Spitfire at Duxford recently on this Forum its worth recording that MT847 once wore a silver scheme. Some pictures below from slides in my collection ( first 2 pictures -photographers unknown )
Seen on display at the Medical Training Establishment at Freckleton in April 1963 coded MT-E !

It subsequently moved to Middleton St George before arriving at Cosford where it was seen mounted in the parade ground below in 1967.

.. by July 86 it was in the museum but in a camouflaged scheme without codes.

Always felt the RAFM should reclaim it’s only Mk XIV and display it in SEAC colours. Wonder whether it will be eventually replaced by the PR19 currently in the Middle East (shopping mall in Kuwait? Bahrain?) to commemorate the last operational use of the Spitfire by the THUM flight at Woodvale
