Well chaps, I’m having a day off today, so I thought I’d sit down with two of my favourite movies – Dark Blue World and Battle of Britain 😀
Anyway, the weather’s bloody ‘orrible out – lots of yucky snow stuff!

Yep – two flying Spitfires – MkV EP120 and MkVIII MV154 – and lots of clever camera tricks!
I think that “piggyback” flying scene was done with a ground-bound replica and some good blue screen work.
Not sure if the characters are based on real people, but I would have thought it unlikely. Still, they’re much more realistic than “Danny” and “Rafe” in Pearl Harbor!! And yes, all filmed in the Czech Republic.
Haven’t seen Hart’s War but I think it was a ‘109. I remember seeing something about it a while back.

I watched Dark Blue World the other night for the first time. It is very good indeed. Is it true they really only had two flying Spifires? Incredible if that’s true.
It is a very sad tale indeed really. Some lovely aerial sequences (both the old and the new ones). Was the young actor really in a flying Spitfire when he was rescued in France? It really looked real when he was sitting on the other pilot’s lap. Amazing take off and landing into that field too!
Were the characters based upon real pilots, or was it pure fiction built round fact?
Where was the film made? Was it all done in the Czech Republic? The UK base didn’t look too British, too many hills. Or am I wrong?
I just watched Hart’s War too. That was OK, a nice air battle between a Mustang and what looked like a BF108 too. Or was it a Buchon? Too quick to see.
Snow, eh? Lucky devils.

I’ve just noticed something, and I wonder if it’s just me…
In one scene in DBW, where the pilot Machaty is chasing a ‘109, I swear there are flashes along the ‘109’s fuselage right before it blows up – did they CG in bullet strikes as well, I wonder?

🙁 I was supposed to be off to Paris (Pontoise), but the weather has intervened.
Looks like a wasted day off. 😡
