Do any of you know the correct letter P7350 had (XT- ? ) when she flew with 603 Sqn during 1940. We believe the pilot was P/O Ludwig Martel. I have looked on the net, but so far I have not found the relevant info.

In my files P/O Dewey was killed in a crash landing of P7286, but I guess the Greatest book says P/O Maxwell crash-landed that Spitfire?
Hi.
Yes i does, it also puts P/O Maxwell in P7286 in Spitfire The History.
So i would go with the log book and put it down to a mix up in Serials
in the books. makes interesting reading though 🙂
Thanks Phil.

The Greatest SQD book says P7365 was shot down on the 27 OCT 1940 with P/O Dewey as the pilot, but this is the only reference i have on the subject.

I believe the correct data for P/O Soden is P7365 XT-Z.

At 10.15 same day P/O John Soden was flying P7325 when he was shot down over Brede injuring his right leg the aircraft was written off.
I believe the correct data for P/O Soden is P7365 XT-Z.

The shrapnel damage dates are interesting – here’s a quote from the entry in the new edition of Spitfire Survivors:
Test flown in August 1940 it was taken on charge on 13 August and delivered to No. 6 M.U. Brize Norton four days later against Allotment Number 11190. The aircraft was delivered to No. 266 (Rhodesia) Sqdn at Wittering on 6 September and allocated the unit code letters “UO-T”. The squadron moved to Martlesham Heath and then to Collyweston, but on 17 October P7350 was transferred to No. 603 (City of Edinburgh) Sqdn of the Auxiliary Air Force at Hornchurch and the codes were changed to XT-. Whilst in service with the squadron it suffered a Cat. B flying accident on 31 October and was dispatched to No. 1 Civilian Repair Unit, Cowley, for repairs, which were complete by 15 November when it was transferred to No. 37 M.U. at Burtonwood, Lancs, for storage.
I wonder if the Cat B accident was the shrapnel damage referred to and it just took a bit of time for it to be recorded?

Hi Fluffy
In the book the “Greatest SQD of them All” it puts ludwik Martel in P7350 at 10.10 friday 25 Oct when he was hit in the left leg by shrapnel, he landed
his damaged aircraft and it was repaired :). At 10.15 same day P/O John Soden was flying P7325 when he was shot down over Brede injuring his right leg the aircraft was written off. So somethings don’t add up.

According to his personal Flying Log Book, Ludwik Martel has not flown P7350, unfortunately. P7359 XT-Q was his usual mount between November 1940 and January 1941, and he also flew P7550 XT-W and P7750 XT-L.

Martel is listed as flying P7350 when he was shot down on the 25th October 1940 in ‘Battle of Britain then & now’ but ‘Poles in Defence of Britain’ says he was flying P7325 XT-W at the time.
