Spitfire Part Identification- MkI or MkVb – Help needed!

Hi everyone, it’s my first post here and I’m hoping someone can help!

I purchased a few WW2 aircraft parts from the Duxford air show a few years ago. The part in question is what I believe to be a Spitfire fuselarge part.

When I bought it, I was told it was from the crash of a MkVb in the Scottish boarders (Spitfire AR403 flown by Sgt. Malcolm Robertson in 1943).

However, I have noticed a part number on it that I believe points to a MkI not a MKVb. Can anyone offer any help clearing this up for me?

Part number: 30027 243 9 then missing…

I believe the ‘300’ relates to a MkI and a MKVb would ‘349’.

Thanks.

Hi Matthew.

I worked on the recovery of this aircraft.

I may be able to share more information with you.

Its possible the very piece you have passed through my hands.

Thanks guys, that makes sense. That’s the answer I was hoping for as, although it would have been cool to have something from a MKI, I have some history for this specific aircraft and it’s pilot.

Yes, that is correct. You will find parts beginning with 300 on Spitfires and Seafires up to Mk’s 24 and indeed 47. Probably a few in the Attacker as well!

I believe if the part was common to both the mkI and mkV series then it would have a 300 code as it would not have been changed from the earlier design. So depending what it is it would be normal to find parts on a mkV with the seemingly mkI part numbers.
