A picture has turned up on Facebook showing a mysterious object in the engine bay of an early mark of spitfire.
It is rectangular and just below the glycol tank on the port side. I’ve suggested it might be the suppressor, but can anyone confirm it?

It’s ok. I found out that they’re balance weights for the prop

Any chance of posting the photo?

U could be right, Ian. There appears to be a cable going into it-but I just checked and it looks like it’s going behind it.
Maybe a balance weight for the prop?

Some early Spits had a big rectangular lead mass balance at the front of the engine bay. It reappeared later on Seafires, presumably to balance the hook.
