Spitfire parts for your viewing.

I thought I would share with you some parts that we recovered from a wreck site last year. I am no Spitfire expert so I will just post the photos for you to see. I have cleaned the parts and tried to show part numbers where shown.

I have more parts and may post some later when time allows.

First part is a balance weight of some sort it would be appreciated if you could let me know what it is for.

This one should be a bit obvious.

Bottom part of the reflector sight. This part houses the lens that has the traditional target on it. Although cracked and degraded it still show when light is passed through it.

What remains of the compass. I also have the cradle and small pieces of the rim showing the degrees and points of the compass.

Rudder pedals still with the elastic retainers on the top tier.

I think this part is the main anchor point for the seat harness. There should be wires coming from the rear and attaches to a bulkhead further back in the fuselage.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8379/8650149282_cbbc397ebf.jpg

Again quite obvious.

Does anyone know what this next part is. I have posted pics outside and inside. This part puzzles me a little.

Throttle handle. You can still see Throttle in red if you look carefully.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8112/8650142326_85c85587ef.jpg

Anyone any idea what these are?

Supply Port & Starboard but for what? I am pretty sure that the front is the workings of a gauge.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8116/8649034143_9cdbf52188.jpg

Pretty sure the smashed up remains of 2 buttons used to be in this frame. Again what would they be. There is a flap which covers them.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8105/8650135396_33a37d7a1f.jpg

Next few pics are just odd bits and pieces that have come out of the wreck.

I’m very interested in your fuel pressure warning lamp.

Hi there,

I do not have this to hand at the moment as I am moving flats in about a month. But as soon as I place my hands on it I will poet a photo here of it from every angle. I will also have a look at it for markings.

I will send you a pm to give you a heads up about the post here when I do.

Meanwhile I am sure some of the chaps here might be able to help.

Fuel Pressure Warning Lamp

Hello Merlin,

This is my first post so I’m hoping it works out okay. I’m very interested in your fuel pressure warning lamp, currently I’m rebuilding the instrument panel in our static display MkVCT EE853 UP-O which should be fitted with the warning lamp but currently has the gauge. I’m wondering if your lamp holding plate has any engraving on it please? Do you have a photo of it from front on?
Thanks for any help you can provide.
Langdon

Fantastic displays, and an excellent array of parts Merlin. I thought the scattered poppies were a nice touch too !

Sorry but no plans to rebuild this aircraft. We simply do not have the funds or abilities to do that.

The engine wasnt onshow because it was too large for the event building. We are however hoping to have it at east fortune airshow this year.

Thanks for posting the images Merlin. The parts certainly look a lot better now they’ve been cleaned up!

Was the engine on display? I can’t see it in any of the photos…

Lovely pictures, thanks for sharing.

Of interest to me, from a purely anoraks point of view, is the existence of ‘long-toggle’ magneto switches used in the panel. (Post 41 picture 12).

On another note, there is just so much of this aircraft left, presumably with an intact and not so ‘thin but robust’ provenance. Are there any plans for a rebuild?

And the other pictures. Didnt know we had a 20 picture limit but suppose it saves flooding the forum with photos I suppose.

Hi all,

Just thought I would update you all on the first quite successful day of our exhibition. So without further ado here are some photos.
Some parts you might recognise others you wont.

Most of the photos dont show the crowds of people we actually had the room stuffed full of vistitors on a number of occasions but obviously I wasnt able to operate the camera while trying to mingle too.

Hullo all,
Found the other plate with +MIC- on it in the cockpit very badly crushed, so thanks for that.
Also found a small Black painted plate with + LOAD + at the bottom of it.
Any ideas as to what and where this would have come from.
Drem.

@Richard Alnutt

No, its part of the hydraulic filter. The mirror part is made of brass – quite thin, and not beefy at all!

There may be another one with it that says + MIC –

Its one of the backplates for the Mic/Tel terminal blocks for the pilots headset.

Bruce

I have another somewhere as I saw the mic and tel on it and wondered if it might be for the headset. I really have no idea where it is though.

You could go to The John Grey Centre, Haddington, Web Site and they will have all the details there.

Is it possible that this part is the fairing for the rear-view mirror? It would need to be pretty beefy after all.

Cheers,
Richard

Does anyone know what this next part is. I have posted pics outside and inside. This part puzzles me a little.

To the right of the seat (if you are sitting in it) between frames 10 and 11.

Hullo,
No sign of another one as the cockpit is really smashed up.
Any pics of the area where it was situated might be of help though.
