Hi,
I was hoping to see photos of the manston crash as I have not seen those yet. The photos that you are showing here are all old for me as I have seen them a long time ago. At this moment the Dutch Spit has 0 flying hours for the 2003 seison

I have to say I did smile at the time, It was only a month after it came back on line from a major repair which took 8 months to do including re sparing the wings & carry through beams! so I saw a very sheepish pilot when I arrived there! there was some noticeable squirming going on I can tell you. 😀

Gotta like it.
I guess this many years after, knowing all was well in the end, its safe to laugh a little! I’ll have to remember that expression though. Hope you haven’t copyrighted it or anything.
I can think of an analagous expression that could be applied to most crunch-ups out there on the highways and byways. Afterall, they are rarely really accidents, but rather failures in the seat/wheel interface system!

OH YES!! 😀 😀
It never broke when I ran it!

Thanks for that.
Thought this one had been a while back. Just wanted to confirm. I seem to remember seeing something about this on the forum a few weeks back
Why…… Seat to stick interface failure
Is that a euphemism for pilot error?!
By: warbirdUK - 23rd September 2003 at 19:16
The flying shot was taken about half an hour before the landing incident.
When….19th May 1996 at 16.35
Why…… Seat to stick interface failure,
There was no fault with the aircraft systems.
We repaired it & it test flew 27th July 1996 at 14.15

SO what exactly was the sequence of events in this incident. I’m a little confused, and not familiar with it.
Was it just a U/C failure? Or did the Extra in the last shot have something to do with it all?
When did this happen?

Thanks for the explanation! I understand the workings a lot better now – so the gear never quite made it all the way into the locks? And presumably, it won’t have tripped either of the “down” indicators?
By: warbirdUK - 23rd September 2003 at 18:20
Hi Eddie, There is both mechanical or hydraulic & a light. the lever turns the lock assembly via a cable & chain this releases the gear to free fall. The last few degrees movement of the gear selector then lets the hydraulic pump push the gear into the down locks, while the gear is in transit there is a telltale window on the selector that will show ‘down’ the system works at around 300 psi but when the gear is in the locks the jacks are still pumping & the system stalls at around 1200 psi this then pushes a shuttle valve in the selector & also shows ‘idle’ in the telltale window. When I got to the aircraft I looked in the cockpit & saw the telltale was still in ‘down’ this then told me that the lever had not been pushed all the way to where it should have been! Also, bear in mind that the pump is run off the end of the engine cam shaft & that the engine RPM is quite low on the landing approach.
I hope this explains it OK.

Ooops.
I’m not really familiar with the Spitfire U/C – would it be showing green with the electrical indicators and would the mechanical undercarriage indicators be showing the U/C as down?

Not putting the U/C lever all the way down & through the gate! 🙁
The wheels just walked back up into the wheel bays!
I have one of the lower prop blades in my hall.

Just before……………

Look at the smoke from the Extra! to be where he is now he had to climb!! I have the previous picture but it’s maybe not one to post!
This was under Military rules NOT in the UK.
I repaired it in the wash hanger that is to the right of the picture.

Looks to me like the prop was going pretty fast at the time?
