Spitfire pilot and his dog.

I came across this photo and wondered whether anyone can provide anymore detail, pilots name, sqn etc. The original caption only says ‘1942: Man’s best friend- An RAF Spitfire pilot takes his pet dog for a spin’.

…or is the aircraft just wet? take a look at the ground under the port wing in the third image referred to.

I know that I know too little to be able to comment on such things but is it really a high gloss finish or is the aircraft just wet? take a look at the ground under the port wing in the third image referred to.

Kev,

This is gloss finish.

The very first shots show the exhaust stacks reflecting in the shielded area of the cowling below.

Thanks for the replies.

Do I detect a hint of suspicion regarding the photographs authenticity??

Regards,

Nick

No suspicion, just pointing out that this Spitfire is outside the norm for a Mk IX…and indeed it has proved to be a very early Supermarine built aircraft, rather than from the bulk of production at Castle Bromwich.

Gasp!
A re-enactor and late model dog?
Quick,, check the dogs dataplate…just how much original material is in there?

We don’t want a new-build dog spoiling the provenance.

I think the forum hits a new level of knowledgability when forumites start recognising the squadron dogs! 🙂

The dog has a resemblance to 300 Squadron mascot ‘Misia’.

I have seen a Polish pilot in a similar pose – I’ll see if I can find it…

Close but maybe not the one…
