North Weald based Spitfire PR.XI PL965 returned to flight this afternoon after 15 months on the ground which included having her original 1945 Merlin 70 engine re-installed. Two successful test flights were conducted today π

Did not realize it was an older video. I’m looking forward to seeing her in the correct colors.

A friend emailed me video of it a couple of days ago. Looks like PRU blue with invasion stripes and the Merlin sounds great.:D
Same Spitfire but thats the old scheme and the old engine – she is still in bare metal at the moment – and actually makes an unusual sight these days.
Thanks for the nice coments chaps – we will certainly be putting ‘maximum effort’ in to getting the new scheme right – particularly the details and stencils.
There are some photos over on the UK airshows site taken of her yesterday at the Hangar 11 Supporters Day- look in the ‘Warbird and older jet photography section.

I saw in the servicing photos that the windscreen was off – it hasn’t been replaced, perchance? I look forward to seeing the photos – knowing your schemes Mark, it’ll be a cracker!

…replicate her appearance in Spring 1945 with 16 Sqdn. 2nd TAF – although based on PRU Blue, this is somewhat different from any scheme she has worn since the original re-build in 1992
More’s to the point, completely accurate along with her original engine! Lovely news, well done all!

The old D-Day scheme (and the earlier pink scheme underneath it) was completely stripped off earlier this year and at the moment she is test flying in bare metal with the civil registration G-MKXI displayed. In a couple of weeks a new scheme will be applied to replicate her appearance in Spring 1945 with 16 Sqdn. 2nd TAF – although based on PRU Blue, this is somewhat different from any scheme she has worn since the original re-build in 1992 – so hopefully a welcome change.
Lovely! Can’t wait. I expect she’ll be at Old Warden at some point.

Have her markings changed?

It would be nice to see her in Holland again next year.

That was the first Spitfire I ever saw up close while at Overloon in gloss blue and D-Day stripes, there was a tarpaulin over the canopy as it was probably smashed. It looked terrible at the time. That was 1984.
Cheers
