Droopy?
The nose of the aircraft looks like it has a pronounced droop, which looks very strange. Jonathan
There is no change to the engine thrust line.
All Griffon engine Spitfires have that little droop.
PS890 has a revised Spinner profile. This is a dedicated new designed spinner unit assembly that incorporates and mates with a de Havilland propeller fitted originally to a Shackleton. It is a close fit and substantially slimmer than the DH manufactured spinner fitted to the Shackleton.
Stock Mk XIX’s and the stock Seafire Mk 47’s, for that matter, both have spinners and propellers manufactured by Dowty Rotol.
A reasonable compromise in my view to get it in the air with a limited budget.
The attached image shows what happens if you fit a standard Shackleton Propeller and Spinner assembly to a Seafire 47. The o/diameter of the spinner is too great. Note compared to the Mk XIX the the Seafire has the unique induction intake in the lower cowling directly behind the prop.

Lost in translation.
Just an in formation to MARK12: ALL the Mk XIX was not pressurised.
RM626 to RM647 have no pressurized bulkhead + floor and are powered by a Griffon 65. There are an exit door on the left side
The pressurized Mk XIX are fitted with a Griffon 66. There are no exit door, but have a long and small air intake on the right side of the engine cowling.
I added one new view (of PS890) to my 5 first photographs, in a new post regarding the airshow of La Fertรฉ Alais 2005.

Araman,
What I said was – “The Mk XIX cockpit was pressurised, in the main,…”
In English this means most but not all of them. ๐

However, Steve confirmed that 2000hp are more than enough and the Spit takes off straight and climbs hard !
That’s right !!!

Hello Jonathan,
Both jbs and I really enjoyed PS890 @ LFA.
The propellor sound makes it is so distinctive compare to the other Spitfire in the airshow circuit.
A must see… :diablo:

I saw this Spit displayed yesterday at La Ferte Alais, in somewhat difficult conditions. I am not sure I like it at all. It makes a very unplesent noise (To my ears), I guess due to the contrarotating props. The nose of the aircraft looks like it has a pronounced droop, which looks very strange. I will post some pictures when I get back to the UK tomorrow.
Having said all the above, it is always interesting to see something new and unique so kudos to the owner for getting her back in the air.

Lost in translation?
Gooday all !
As per Steve Hinton, the infos I got about this Spit are:
– Spit MkXIX are (all?) modified Spit MkXI, the fuselage almost remained the same, so was the windshield.
– PS890 was offered to Chino by … ?? (Malaysia?… Phillipines?… sorry, I bloody can’t remember  !!) and was equipped with both original engine & prop.
If I understood Steve right (amfrench u know… ๐ฎ ), both were sent to RollsRoyce for (big) maintenance but apparently, the factory decided to send back a brand new Shackelton engine & double propeller instead.
Steve seemed to be pleased with the deal and since then, the main goal was to get a unique airworthy Spit version which, by the way, did really fly 60 years ago as prototype equipped with a contra-prop. 70lbs of extra ballast are needed in the tail to remain within the CoG.– PS890 Griffon ‘only’ gives 2000hp iso 2500hp, due to the fact that Shackelton were not water injected. Original MkXIX seemed to be able to reach FL400 without any problem…
However, Steve confirmed that 2000hp are more than enough and the Spit takes off straight and climbs hard !
As previously said, the contra-prop is no torke at all and the beast takes off in few hundred meters at full throttle !Hope this helps.
Inverted,
There are quite a number of technical inaccuracies in your post, if you are quoting Steve Hinton verbatim, and I hope you will not mind if I correct them.
The Mk XIX is technically a PR version of the Mk XIV. The Mk XI is a PR version of the Mk IX. There are many many differences in dimension and reinforcement between these two PR versions – fuselages/tail units/wings etc.
The Mk XIX cockpit was pressurised, in the main, and the the cockpit glazing both windscreen and canopy have no common parts. They are totally different designs.
PS890 was donated to Ed Maloney at Planes of Fame, or the Air Museum at Ontario, California as it then was I believe, by King Bhumipol of Thailand, in circa 1962.
The engine/prop exchange is a ‘little economic with the actuality’. ๐
The Griffon 57/58 series as fitted to the Shackleton was fitted with water/methanol injection but is not fitted to this Spitfire for technically expedient reasons.
