I have inherited a piece of a propeller from my mother. Her father (my grandad) allegedly got this from a Spitfire. My grandad serviced at RAF Wittering as a mechanic during WW2. They lived at Wansford between Peterborough and Stamford. The piece was used as a base for a model spitfire, but unfortunately the model is gone.
The piece measures 5 3/8″ – 5 1/2″ along, 2 3/8″ across on the narrow side and 3 1/2″ across the wide side. The height of the piece is 2″ – 2 1/2″. It is laminated by 6 pieces of wood 5/8″+ 5/8″+ 5/8″+ 3/4″+ 3/4″+ 5/8″.
I have been trying to search the internet about information and came across your web site. I would be very greatful if you can confirm if this actually is a piece of Spitfire prop or not. I am also interested in which type Spitfire it may originate from and what type of wood it is made of.
Attached are some photos.
I would be very greatful for your response or if you have any other contacts I can try.
