Spitfire race around the I.o.W.

Guess there are no Forum members on the Isle of Wight to report on the Spitfire that was racing around the Island last Tuesday?

Oh yes there are!…(see also the posting from Mackerel in the ‘Spotted’ thread).

Seems to be for a forthcoming TV prog involving MH434 up against one of the Red Bull air race ‘Extras’.

Pylon erected at Sandown airport, mucho air to air stuff with heli-telly equipped choppers, around the island, over the Needles etc.

All will be revealed in due course no doubt.

Chumpy.

Hi all , Thanks Chumpy for putting newforest right. Members of this forum do exist on the Isle of Wight ! !
Paul Bonhomme was in MH434 & Nigel Lamb in the extra. The program being made had something to do with schnider ( ! ) air races. I’m sure will become apparent .

Paul Bonhomme and Nigel Lamb were the pilots I believe.

At a guess it would have been Nigel Lamb who was in the MX-2 (or MX-S?) and he, of course, is involved with OFMC, operators of MH434. BTW I have an MR-2 in the garage but I wish it was an MX-2.

Coming out of Cowes in a sailing boat on a beautiful June morning, what could be better?

Well, a Merlin engined Spitfire circling overhead over a dozen times, for a start!

The only slight fly in the ointment was the buzz-saw noise of the tiny racer thingamy tucked in behind the Spit’s wing, making far more racket than its size warranted, and drowning out the sound of R-R.

Thankfully, they did split up for the last few passes.

Perfect.

Apologies to ‘Spotted Thread’ and Mackerel! Yes, a race between the Spitfire and a MR 2 and the winner was the larger plane, of course!:)
