At Deelen as well. Very substantial remains of a Spitfire including both fueltanks and frame 5. Don’t know the serial at the moment as there was no information board next to it, but it was well publicised when recovered some years ago. Last time I saw it, it was lying upside down.

Thanks Mark,
I was reading an old copy of the other magazine yesterday and there was the item about the recovery with the serial. But you beat me to it.
It’s great to see your enthusiasm (or should that be obsession 😉 ) sparking off the computer screen as always.
Cheers

Whats the story behind it?
Dug out of soft ground at Kekerdom, Holland, on 1st September 1997. I seem to recall that the recovery party anticipated that they were to be digging up a Typhoon.
It was an ex 416 Sqd. Mk.IX lost in a flying battle 29th September 1944. The ‘Lynx leaping a Maple Leaf’ squadron crest was still visible on the port cowling.

I shall return
WarbirdUK
I am delighted to see that you have not left us. 🙂
I have had enough of dictionary definitions for one day. 😮
Well I grant you it needs more than a quick rub down with an oily rag but less than this has been resuscitated to flight.

A fantastic display item…
…and qualifies as a surviving Spitfire in my book.
It is MJ874.
