The ‘Spitfire Mk26’ is not meant for looking at or listening to, it’s to enable pilots like me, who will never get to fly a real Spitfire, to have a relatively inexpensive aircraft that isn’t a boring spam can or a superannuated ragwing like I fly at present.

I must admit though I don’t feel calling it a Spitfire 26 does it any favours.

I’m not against aircraft such as spitfire mk26,i just feel its wrong to name them that,i think to carry the name of aircraft it “copies” it should be much more faithful to the original like the me262 new builds are, essentially i would love to see more full scale replicas of aircraft maybe time forgot as it were rather than lookalike scaled down aircraft, having said that the mk26 does look quiet good and has got to be fun to fly.

I would not mind full scale replicas of any mark spitfires not currently flying at least then get to see that shape in sky but can,t see the point unless powered by a merlin or griffon personally think the so called mark26 is poor cousin to a real spit and almost cheapens the name.

Spitfire Replica’s

Actually I think if you managed to contact all the people who are building replica’s you’d be suprised how many are out there. Just from the people who’ve contacted me Through our Y2K Spitfire Project or people who I’ve found elsewhere I believe I could count between 10-12 who are working on either full scale replicas (at least 4-5 in the USA) and reduced sized replicas. I’ve also had people contact me for copies of our Blueprints to assist them with there looking into which type to build. The video posted earlier in the link is from the Phoenix area and there is a Second full scale Jurca replica being built with an Allison and should fly in 2004.

Certainly is – on both points.

With the light weight of the Spitfire (less than 5,000lbs, I think), no wonder she manages to overtake the Mustang so easily!

The fuselage is welded steel tube with aluminium skin, and the wings are wooden.

I know of a Mk1 version being built at present by a guy called John Morrin, and there’s at least one more out there….!

The Spitfire is a replica presumably with an Allison engine.
The Mustang is the real thing I believe.

The “On Patrol” footage with Art Vance flying the P-51 is amazing!

Plus, I have it on pretty good knowledge that there are several more full-size Spitfire replicas under construction.
