Spitfire – Robert Taylor

Hi everyone. I’ve been looking into a print that my father purchased for me in 1979 and have ended up here following the advise of a couple of retailers. I was wondering what the current second hand value would be as I’m not sure whether I’ll be keeping the print or not.

It’s signed by Douglas Bader and Johnnie Johnson, in pencil I think and has a separate label detailing it as a first edition print.

Here’s a picture of the actual item which I recently removed from the frame after I cracked the glass.

Thankyou very much

Mark

And I won’t even mention Robert Taylor’s deliberate mistake on Eagle Attack:D

The roundels are the wrong type 🙂

Ok, I’ll bite…

What deliberate mistake did RT make in Eagle Attack – please elaborate 🙂

🙂 I am intrigued as well, not only what was the mistake [is it a mistake if it’s deliberate?] but WHY did he make a mistake ?

Almost right 🙂 The first title is Summer Victory

Well, I remembered it had Summer in the title somewhere…..and it has been quite a while since I had it hanging on the wall to read the title….;)

Thanks very much for the responses on this. I’ve decided to let it go all the same so hopefully I’ll get in the region of £100.

Best regards.

Hi Mark

A similar print, in identical, if not better condition than yours, was recently sold on eBay for £109.56.

You’re thinking of the Battle of Britain Trilogy set which came out for the 50th Anniversary of the BofB in 1990. The 3 x individual prints were called IIRC, Spitfire Summer, Hurricane Force and Eagle Attack

Just out of interest was that painting part of a trilogy ,possibly a Hurricane and a 109 in the other two paintings.

A “great” place to find out what people will pay for prints nowadays is ebay. This print and “Hurricane” with Bob Stanford Tuck’s signature appear quite often. Unfortunately (from memory) the prices they go for are a lot less than you would see retail wise (below £100), such as at Aces High (“Hurricane”, framed was over £500 IIRC).

Spitfire Print

Hi Mark,

I have the a copy of the same print, with same signatures. As you say it dates back to the late 1970’s, and was first sold though a column advert in one of the Sunday papers. I seem to remember it was sold at a retail price of less than £10 per print. Interestingly the “label” strip detailling the two signatories was added at time of issue in order to correct an error in decorations accredited to one of the pilots (as printed on the print itself).

Last time I saw a copy on the re-sale market was probably three or four years ago where it was being displayed at an airshow by a specialist dealer in Aviation prints. It was carrying an asking price of £350 if I remember correctly. At the time I calculated that this showed it had increased in real-term value since issue, after allowing for effects of inflation.

This particular print was issued before signed aviation prints became the more common-place items they are today, which may boost it’s value, but, as Trumper has said, it’s value is totally dependent upon demand/interest.

Carrying the signatures of two such well-known Spitfire veterans who are, unfortunately, no longer with us, and illustrating a mission when they are offically recorded as having flown together would suggest it should be very collectable, but you need to find someone with an interest in the subject.

Cheers

Paul F

I think as with most things paintings are worth what someone wants to pay.
Just out of interest was that painting part of a trilogy ,possibly a Hurricane and a 109 in the other two paintings.
You really ought to ask the people that sell them for a living ,but just watch out they are giving you a fair price if they purchase it from you.
Have you seen these websites
