Anyone got any news on TE184? It’s been some months since it moved to Duxford however I have heard very little of it since, other than it is still there. I notice it still doesn’t have a permit (last one expired May 2002).
Many Thanks

Well, in my books, restoration is “returning an artifact to original condition”.
As this aircraft was built as a low-back Spitfire, to restore it, it would have to be restored as a low back aircraft, rather than being modified into something it never was… I’m not a big fan of changing a historical artifact because you’d prefer it in a different way.

The aircraft is definitely a XVI… it was originally low back, but was butchered to a high back config in its “restoration”.
There were some XVIs built in high back spec – the difference between that and a IX is the XVIs have Packard Merlins.
Hi Eddie
I would be interested to hear how you have come to your conclusions regarding this restoration.

When checking the CAA’s G-INFO site I find that TE184 has not had a CofA since 1992, although there might be a change coming up.
Look again, the year was 2002!

Still at Duxord awaiting work on the prop (allegedly).

I think the last time she flew was into Duxford, under the custodianship of the OFMC. Have we ever found out what’s happening with her??

Does she fly once in a while?

Low back.

….or they could.

Pretty sure it was Flypast, although of course I could be wrong…

I’m sure there were a number of sources claiming she was being used for film work, hence her move to the OFMC
Yeah, I heard that. Don’t remember where though.

Bugger it, if my 6 numbers came up tonight, I’d have her!

Wherever it ends up I hope it gets the care and attention it deserves, despite of a few niggles over the years it’s not a bad aircraft and really deserves more use than it’s had over the years. Seems to have spent most of it’s time in storage.

What are the odds on it ending up in New Zealand?

I go to Duxford fairly regularly (at least every couple of weeks) and it doesn’t seem to me as though any work has been done since she arrived.

I did read somewhere that she’s now being operated by the OFMC – probably stating the obvious, I know!
