I see from G-INFO that TE184/G-MXVI changed its registered owner on Tuesday 10/10/06. Lets hope that it gets the treatment it deserves and we see it back in the air before too long. I doubt it will be keeping Mk12’s colour scheme though. A shame as I always thought it looked rather different even if it is French! ๐

What sort of thing Roobarb! Modifications and upgrades? Or just generall TLC.
Alan
Well I’m sure the new owner and PPS would consider that privilaged information, so let’s just say a lot of TLC and some other considerations that require some engineering application, the result of which should hopefully see this neglected aeroplane put into an airworthy condition befitting the types much loved status in the warbird world and on this forum.
How’s that for a quote ๐

TE184 was dismantled by a team of Duxford based engineers and staff from PPS at Booker over the last two weeks. It departed DX yesterday (Thursday 26th) by road, bound for Booker and an in-depth overhaul. It sounds as if they’re going to do all the things some of us have wanted for it for years. ๐

If someone spots her at DX this weekend you’ll probably see root fairings and cowls etc off, so I was informed, so don’t expect any engine runs soon.

Spitfire TE184
Hello
On 3rd May 1998, at the Duxford Spitfire Airshow, TE184 was in the flypast of the formation of 16 Spitfires, it formed Green section with MH434, PV202 and PL965. This was the biggest since WWII. In May 1999, TE184 appeared in 308th Fighter Squadron USAAF Mediterranean Theatre of Operations colours representing VIII โFargo Expressโ as flown by Captain Leland.P.Holland this was temporary(wash-off)for special photo shoot flown by Norman Lees(R.I.P. 4.8.2000, PV202).

Joe,
I understand that the link below details some more recent work by Alan Purdyโs company.
The link contains a nice piece of news concerning the re-fitting of authentic exhaust stacks to the BBMF Hurricanes and early Spitfires. PZ865 has had hers fitted and the remainder are to follow next year apparantly. It will certainly be nice to see 350 and 910 with the proper ‘cans’ as the news piece calls them (cannot say I have heard that term used in this context before though)!

Trent Aero are still in existence and are based at East Midlands Airport.
I think they did a lot of pioneering work in the early days of Spitfire restorations, restoring many sets of wings and several complete aircraft. Increasingly though, the Spitfire side of the business became more of a ‘side line’. IIRC the last aircraft they completed was MJ730. They are still in the aircraft business doing a lot of sub-contract work for Companies such as Rolls Royce and BAE.Incidentally I was speaking to the chap who completed the restoration of TE 184 this morning, (Alan Purdy), and he mentioned he still has the original instrument panel. So if the new owner would like the cockpit restoring to the original spec then get in touch!

According to the CAA website Rob Lamplough’s mark 8 is showing a potential change of ownership in progress
This could simply be putting it under the banner of a different company but still owned by Robs. The Arial Museum Ltd, the N Weald based company that have neen the ‘owners’ for many years are no longer based there so all this may just be administrative. This would bring the Spitfire in to line with G-BIXL, the P-51, registered under his own name.

TE184 changes hands
I understand this aircraft was restored in the late 1980s by a company called Trent Aero at East Midlands. Could someone please give some information about them as I understand they no longer exist.

As far as I know she has ‘wet wings’, though YAK11FAN probably knows more on this with his experience of this Spit. If someone spots her at DX this weekend you’ll probably see root fairings and cowls etc off, so I was informed, so don’t expect any engine runs soon.

[QUOTE=Bradburger]One thing I did notice was that she was fitted with 85 gallon (I’m sure that’s what the stencils said) wing tanks and what looked like non standard skins (no gun bays) on the top of the wing.
Any one have any more info on this mod?
