‘Evening all,
I seek help with a question which I was asked recently, ……Is it possible to fly the Spitfire Trainer Mk9 PV202 (based at Duxford,) from the rear cockpit and or any of the other two seat Spitfires so equipped ?
Best regards

I was in the back – rudder pedals and control column.

I flew in and flew MJ627 last year.
That’s interesting. Can you summarise which controls you could move. I assume you were in the back.

Some of the scenes in the final dogfight of ‘Battle of Britain’ were filmed from a two-seater with the camera in the front and flown solo from the rear. Viv Bellamy told me that he had discussed this with Jeffrey Quill and was told him that, although visibility was bad, it was from the front too and was not that much of a problem.

My understanding is that although there are dual controls, the only way that you would be allowed to fly the 2 seat Spitfire is to undergo a proper sequence of training. ie with Boultbee.
I was told that this applies to Qualified Pilots as well as non qualified people.

Thank you one and all for your input.

All the two seater Spitfires that I have worked on or seen have full dual controls (including the Dick Melton/Charles Church built PT462) and can be flown from the rear and select gear up and down if so desired. However it is local policy to remove the rear selector handle when carrying “passengers” (as opposed to performing training flights) to remove the chance of an inadvertent selection by said passenger.

Many thanks, a great start. MJ627 was also 158 in Irish Air Corps service. I wonder are there others?

Ex-IAC aircraft:
ML407
MJ772
PV202
TE308
Most of, if not all, the other two-seaters are modern rebuilds.

The theory behind them being designated trainers should allow for it, but…? ;o)

MJ 627 has dual controls.
