Spitfire With D.B. Engine

Looks pretty good I think 😀 , Much better than a 109 with a merlin  , I love the B of B movie, But never liked the 109s with merlins :p , Growing up I always picked the fakes such as T-6s playing Zeros and 108s playing 109s and such, But with out the ugly spanish 109s there would have been not much of a movie I guess  , Cheers everyone, Tally Ho! Phil 😉 and a German static Spit.

So if the cross-section of the Spitfire and the Bf110 nacelle more or less matched…Merlin-engined Bf110, anyone?

Ahhhh !!—Yes- The “Schmittfire”.

Those of us who are desk bound Flight Simmers, can actually Fly this Machine in FS-2002 FS-2004 and CFS3 ” Battle for Europe”. as an Add-On by Heavenly Hangers.Com and it is a free download.

I’ve flown it myself and in on-line CFS3 dogfights and it is a very punchy, fast, lethal piece of Kit, because these folks have put together a”What If” Aeroplane and for CFS3 only it’s Armament is:-

2x20mm Hispano’s Mk2’s

4×303 Brownings

2x13mm MG 131 machine Guns

1x MG 151 Gun. :D:D:D

The mind boggles, as to how it flys with all that weight in, not to mention ammo, etc, but we are talking “What If” — but the engine power is all there.

The longer Nose and bigger engine means you need to keep busy trimming out everything a lot more than in a normal Spitfire, but it’s OK, landing is very tricky though, but the fire power is “awsome”. The Engine sound is great too and this aircraft is painted up to look really good in German WW2 Colours and markings. I’d also say that this company seem to have got all the characteristics right,as it is a delight to blast around the sky in and what other way would anyone ever get to sample what could have been.

Known as “The Schmittfire”, give it a go folks, you won’t be disappointed. Go to Google, put in Heavenly Hangers .Com and head into their Web Site, In there, go to freeware Archive at bottom of Page and you should hit the Schmittfire Download straight away. Every time I try the link, I’m directed to another Web Site, so this route works fine.

In case anyone still ventures here or by accident

Was researching this aircraft which is how I found this thread. Thought anyone stumbling across it might like to see my own contribution based on what I have learnt. As the image isn’t showing you can see it here. http://www.screenworx.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/illustration/spitfireillustra.html

Spitfire Vb serial EN830 / NX-X fell into German hands late in 1942. It crash landed on November 18th 1942 while being flown by P/O (Sous Lt.) Bernard Scheidhauer of the Free French Air Force, attached to 131 “County of Kent” Sqn. RAF. He and his No.1, P/O Henri de Bordas, had been on a “rhubarb” to Normandy during the afternoon. EN830 was hit by light flak and made a forced landing in a turnip field at Dielament Manor, Trinity, Jersey.
…..
…..
After a brief period at Rechlin confirming the performance data, the modified Spitfire returned to Echterdingen to serve officially as a test bed. It was popular with the pilots in and out of working hours. Its career ended on 14th August, 1944, when a formation of US bombers attacked Echterdingen, wrecking two Ju.52s, three Bf.109Gs, a Bf.109H V1, an FW.190 V16, an Me.410 and the Spitfire. The remains of the hybrid Spitfire were scrapped at the Klemm factory at Böblingen

May I you herewith petition about more information on Scheidhauer crash landing on Jersey, eventually about photos from dedicate a Memorial and photos of “a small piece” of EN830’s wooden prop and Scheidhauer’s flying helmet ?

A French wooden fullsize replica has now been fitted with an Allison engine

Spitfire, I take it?

That’d be F-WGML.

Talking of Messerschmitts & Merlins…….

I used to pose a question during one of our clubs quizzes……….

Which aircraft made its FIRST flight on a Rolls Royce Kestrel and it LAST flight on a RR Merlin ??

The answer is of course, the Bf-109 (OK – so the ‘Last flight’ bit is a bit iffy – but you get what I mean)

I’ll get me coat……………

However the book then goes on to say that no correspondence survives on this so there is no evidence that the RR/Bf 109 exchange took place.

One has to wonder wether it did and as Willy Messerschmitt worked with Hispano in Spain after the work that he did in fact design the HA-1112.

I think it might have taken place – Messerschmitt himself recommended the Merlin engine for the Hispano-109s when Spain was producing them, so who’s to say his recommendation was purely based on the engine’s reputation or what have you?

SG to owner of small 51 rep at North Weald (?) many years ago upon being asked if he’d like to try it out “No thanks, smells too much like a coffin”

What was the movie that had a horde of P51’s painted in Luftwaffe colors?

“Fighter Squadron”?

This 51 replica, was it 3/4 scale? I can think of only one that was ever in the UK, and that was one of the Jurca kites. Would need to find a pic, but I think it crashed some time ago.

DB Spitfire

Funny this thread re-surfaced because right at this moment I am reading “Willy Messerschmitt” by Frank Vann.

In the Chapter titled “Problems with the Bf 109” There is made mention about the DB Spitfire (using a DB601N). What is intersting is the mention of re-engining a Bf 109 with a RR Merlin.

Quoted from a Messerschmitt memo

“The Daimler-Benz company is making the following exchange: they are installing the DB601 engine ina Spitfire and the Rolls-Royce Merlin in an Me 109. I have no objection to this trial.

Daimler-Benz are carrying out the exchange to demonstrate that the Spitfire is better with their engine and that the Me 109 with the Merlin is worse.”

However the book then goes on to say that no correspondence survives on this so there is no evidence that the RR/Bf 109 exchange took place.

One has to wonder wether it did and as Willy Messerschmitt worked with Hispano in Spain after the work that he did in fact design the HA-1112.

The book also makes mention of installing Spitfire radiators on Bf 109 as it was felt that it may be more efficent than the one currently on the aircraft.

I will say just on the book that it is a good read and does not gloss over Messerschmitts personality, particularily his affiliation to the Nazi Party and that he was not adverse to a few underhanded tricks to get his way. Incidently the author conjectures that the Bf 110 that Rudolph Hess flew to the UK was infact a either a gift from Messerschmitt or privately owned by Him, bought directly from the company and not a current Luftwaffe aircraft.
