Spitfire wreck – Scapa Flow

It seems that a Spit/Seafire crashed in Scapa Flow circa 1942. However, there seems to be a couple of year wait to find out further info.

Are there any enlightened forumites that can save us the wait?

Not a Spitfire. Pity the pictures are so poor, but there’s a lot of framework there, which Spits don’t have.

I believe Spits only carried one ‘dumpy’ oxygen bottle and two longer, thinner air tanks for the pneumatics. This wreck appears to have two oxygen bottles. There also appears to be some thin steel box structure which doesn’t look Spitfire. I’d guess at Battle or similar. And that really is a guess!

Having looked at the link with two recovered Brownings, it’s not a Battle.
