Can anyone help with a code letter for Spitfire X4170, flown by Bobby Oxspring in which he was shot down on 25 Oct 40 over Kent?
I know the squadron code was LZ but what was the individual aircraft letter?
Thanks

Codes
The codes will NOT be on a Spit. As I said it may not happen, but watch the airshow circuit later this year.

DW squadron code?
Yes, let’s have a DW, to fly the flag for “The Chesters” – the 610 County of Chester auxiliary squadron.
They fought with great distinction in The Battle and it would be great for their codes to be flown again on an early mark Spitfire.
The DW codes painted on many of their Mk.1 Spitfires were, for some reason, painted oversize (reputedly a mis-interpretation of the markings guidelines) and this made the aircraft quite distinctive.

Lets hope we see a spitfire repainted in LZ-R markings, or 610 sqdn DW markings, after 40 years its about time these squadrons were given the paint job. So often do we see them in books, especially DW yet never as an airshow scheme.
Keep meaning to form a list of what have been painted up over the years but never get the time. Trouble is there are so few Mk1 spits than could be painted as such.

There is a bit of it for sale here
Hi Baz,
Thanks very much. This is very useful info. I also got the same code from another source (also today!) so I think I will be safe with it. Keep your eyes open during the B of B celebrations this year and you may possibly find out why the interest in this code letter. Cannot say more – sworn to secrecy – and it may never happen!
Yours aye
