I thought for a moment you were going to tell me it must be genuine because the pilot had had his name and squadron engraved on it…!! :p:diablo:

Andy

I totally agree I am cautious and probably would not have bought this if it was badly damaged, it would have been nice to confirm the history but that would have been icing on the cake. As you say its a nice piece and more usefull to me straight.
I do buy from ebay there but usually always hardware, something I know a little about , (not German stuff :o)but I also travel around quite a bit and the stories I sometimes hear face to face can be even wilder. There are also some A1 sellers a few of who frequent this forum . 🙂

I concluded long ago that the overwhelming majority of what is offered for sale on e-bay and elsewhere does not have the provenance that usually accompanies it. In the case of your panel, Graham, it is what it is and its a nice piece. But it wasn’t recovered from that wreck I’m afraid….well…not unless there has been some serious cosmetic work on it in recent years.

Thanks for sorting that out chaps to be honest I have been to a few digs and thought it was much to straight and complete.
I bought it for what it is rather than believing the history so I am not sad at all. You know it would be nice to get something for once which actually had the correct history. Not sure I could take the shock. 😮
Thanks for Ian keep meaning to update info I remember you mentioned it before.

Graham

I once had the entirity of that wreckage in my hands after purchasing said collection from the defunct London Air Museum for the then embryonic Tangmere Aviation Museum.

Sadly, I can assure you that the panel (as it appears) in your photograph was not recovered from this wreck.

Spitfireman is completely right, Graham. The only way an area like that would survive is if it popped off at the time and was liberated by a local. The same guy was selling some shamefully bad reproduction labels as original. Going into detailed rivet counting the ‘s’s were more suited to Battlestar Galactica than the Battle of Britain. If it’s any consolation, your mystery bit of Seafire is a thrust absorbing head rest for rocket assisted take offs. Top of page 175, Morgan and Shacklady’s big book of Spitfires. Cheered up, I hope so!
This radio, rather than accumulator hatch came out of a Spit which crashed fairly gently into a flooded field. They come out straighter but never that straight!

Makes no odds, that aeroplane hit the ground with much force, everything is damaged, your panel looks like it was removed from something intact. I would be suspicious if it was supposed to come off this wreck.

There are pics of some of the artifacts including the Form 700, are you interested in any particular part?
