The owners of Mk XII Spitfire EN224 have asked me to announce the rebuild contract for this historic aircraft has been given to Air Leasing Limited and upon completion will be flown from Bentwaters. The registration is being re-activated today.
This following on from the recovery of the crashed wreck of EN223 last week is an amazing coincidence.

Airfix has reissued their 1/48 Spitfire Mk.XII kit so I’m curious: has anyone any updates to share of EN224/G-FXII’s restoration?

Out of interest – was the MK.XII rudder shipped out – just curious what it ended up on

Hmm – I had forgotten how old this thread is ! Pretty sad that substancial parts were seperated from each other.

Didnt the Spitfire built for the Portuguese Air Force museum end up with some MK.XII parts in it?
Yes. The tail unit of EN224 was shipped out to South Africa initially for the airworthy rebuild of Mk IX MA793, however the tail plane spars had been sectioned at Cranfield or Salford and another route was taken. Atlas in South Africa were commissioned to build a Mk IX for the Portuguese Beaufighter swap and used the tail unit of EN224 in there static restoration of ML255.

I’m interested as to whether it’s being built with a retractable tailwheel and some of the other Mk VIII refinements or as it came out of the factory, as I’ve read that modifications were made to the ENxxx aircraft in MUs or at a squadron level once the MBxxx machines were being built – or something along those lines.
Tail unit has been sourced from a Mk IX/XVI with fixed tail wheel.

Still progressing with the AL boys at Graceland 🙂 http://airleasing.co.uk/?page_id=50
That is good news. One to really look forward to.

Yes I believe it should have a similar one.

Does this aircraft have the same (seemingly) rare model of RR Griffon that SX336 has?

Anyone know how far away from flight she is?
