Spitfires in crates…

You have probably all seen it before, but just in case:
In the UK, C5 7.00 tonight Monster Moves is about crating up and moving a Spitfire “from Cambridgeshire to America”. These programmes are quite interesting if you don’t take the O.T.T. presentation too seriously (or are in the mood for criticising something!).

As well as the subject aircraft, there was plenty of interest in the background a lot of the time.

What was that leaking from pipes in the wing as they removed the wing – fuel, hydraulic, water?

SFF – Yes. I remember seeing the partially completed fuselage at Booker in 1996 (I think), and the “guide” was telling us about it.

The ‘wot if it goes wrong’ graphics added a bit of spice. The idea of piggy-backing it on a 225 was taking ‘fillers’ a bit too far though.

Wasn’t this the cab that was re-engineered after a Kermit Weeks restoration at Booker?…wing tanks out, wing tanks tanks in…something like that…oh I get confused by it all.

1-2-3…..

Altogether now –

“Flying high since thirty eight,
First plane out past Duxford’s gate,
Merlin engine, ellipse wings,
Over white cliffs, bomber kings,
Angels flying high,
Protect us in the sky,
Protect us as you fly…..”

I believe its a repeat. It covers the dismantlement and shipment of Spitfire PL344 from Duxford to Tom Blair’s aircraft collection.
