Hi guys!
I’m arguying with a Hornet pilot that a Spit XIV would wax anything in a gun only dogfight.
What do you think?
😀 😀

Yes, I heard about that. In any case, I think it is fair to say that the kill was a team effort and they were very lucky that the North Korean pilots were poorly trained.

So what you are saying is that the Spitfire could shoot down a modern (or not so modern) jet if the jet pilot was totally incompetant,.
The best example I can think of where a prop-fighter took out a jet was the Seafury/Mig 15 encounter in Korea where Lt Cdr Carmichael was credited with a Mig 15. The MiGs were poorly flown and used poor tactics which enabled the Sea Fury Pilots to get several firing opportunities. I think that although the kill was awarded to the flight leader, several members of the sea fury flight fired upon the MiG15 that went down.
Anyway, 1v1, with two professional well trained pilots, the jet will not loose because it can didctate terms of the fight, extend at will and can swiftly attack from any direction.

Does anyone know what the g limits of a Spitfire are??

Here’s the important part. Get the jet to go low and slow and he’s toast!
Low no bother, and anything with a decent FCS will coope with slow. Plus the jet will have the added bonus that it can gain energy much more quickly than a Spit could!

Providing the Lightning did not drop its speed and allow itself to be drawn into a close combat turning fight with its more agile opponent

From “Spitfire in Combat” (Alfred Price):
Providing the Lightning did not drop its speed and allow itself to be drawn into a close combat turning fight with its more agile opponent, the Spitfire (or Mustang) stood little chance in such an encounter. The Lightning’s most effective tactic was to position itself several thousand (my italics) feet below its opponent in the latter’s blind zone, and attack it in a steep climb using its Firestreak infra-red homing missles.

Let’s go WAY back to the basic theories. Air Warfare Fighter combat.
Rule One: See the enemy first, shoot him (or her) down before they see you. Don’t mess around. (Reference, oh, just about any air supiriority ace you can think of!)
Rule two: Have a better a/c and / or use the advantages of your a/c to max, and minimise the weaknesses. But you won’t have to because of rule one, eh?… (Reference. Helcats vs Zeros)
Rule 3: Have more speed. You can then choose to engage or not. You can run away if you want.
On 1, 2, and 3, the Spitfire is going to lose against a Lightning, F-16, F-5 or you name it. Sorry!
Compared with the Spitfire a jet is about as monouverable as a barge in wet cement so there is still a chance.

Everybody knows the Spit wax everything else in the sky!!
