Spotting

I can’t find any websites that list facilites for spotting in UK and major European Airport. I know there are such places and I would like your help!

I am creating a website to help spotters find these such places. If you have any info or know of good websites, please post them or tell me on MSN Messenger as I can then add them to my site! Also if you are a good graphic designer (notice I said Good) please help me create a small number of icons for the few sections there will be on my site!

I’ve heard a few stories of people being told to leave certain airport when they’ve been there early in the morning or late at night.It is an unusual time for plane spotting!People acting strange around the airports is another occasion when they have been questioned by police.
I guess at an airport like FRA where you have both military and civil there is hightened security but I wouldn’t they are anti-spotter at all.

The only trouble i’ve ever had was in Heaklion, Crete when i was asked to stop taking photo’s of the AH-7s that were doing touch and goes, and some parked Mirages – but then again nobody really cares in the UK – i’ve only really been to Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Teeside, Sheffield, Heathrow, Stansted, Dublin, AMsterdam, Arrecife, Tenerife, Malaga, Las Palmas, Herakliongirona and palma – and at these places it is really common for us – but then again i have lingered at Mildenhall, Wittering, Leeming, Lakenheath and Cotteshall – so no where really exiting for ya!

Civvie spotting question…

Since there is quite a bunch of civvie planespotters around here, perhaps one of you can answer me this question which has been bugging me for quite a while.

As a purely military planespotter myself, i can´t help but having to spend some time by the fence of civil airports every now and then. But often enough, it´s exactly these bases where one is prone to be arrested for planespotting, most likely of course because there are more people around willing to give you in, and because there is more security. Often enough a warning is what you get (had this at Otopeni when reading the H-5 which was to go to the RIAT and crashed three days later), but sometimes it takes longer (had to spend a night at Wolgograd-Gumrak) or way longer (a few Dutch spotters were busted in the late 1980s at Zagreb).

I would like to know if and if so what kind of similar stories go around in the civvie-planespotting world. And how it´s regarded by your rival-planespotters and such.

Hope anyone can answer me this.

hi all,

just to let you know i got 3 of the EAL B742s at Manchy 3 weeks bak – they have been on remote parking up there (Pink/Yell/Red)- btw the Air Jamaica islander is leased to Loganair for their island routes in scotland i think so it might be only down south 4 a bit – and it’s got a G- reg not a jamaican one!

Not sure whether they’re charter or regular, but in the last 12 months I’ve also seen:

Air Zimbabwe B767-200
DAS Air Cargo DC-10F
Old Canadian B757-200

BA wise, it’s pretty much 737’s (-400 predominantly) and 777’s with a few 146s/RJs, Dash 8’s and ATR-72’s handling regional/domestic ops. They shifted all the 747’s over to LHR last year.

Plus there is a Comet parked on the apron!

Thanks for remembering the LGW visitors that I didn’t, there is one airline we both forgot and thats the daily visit by Aerolineas Argentina DC9 from Madrid.

Boeing 727 5B-DBE I’ve seen at Luton and Boeing 747SP VP-BAT I’ve seen at Heathrow.

The EAL Boeing 747-200s have all been seen at LGW as well as Bournemouth.

At Bournemouth you can see a little Islander in Air Jamacia colours 🙂
You can also see:
Palmair/EAL 737-200s maybe a 747.
Ryanair
Channel Express
Le Cocqs
And other occasional charters like BY.

I would have to say visit Gatwick or Bournmouth. Preferely LGW.

As Dave said there is quite a bit of Variety that comes here. Some that I have seen in the past include:

So as you can see a fair bit of varitey is at Gatwick. As for bournmouth, theres not so much variety, but you do see a few unusual aircraft, that you probably wont see again, or very often. For example, when I visited Bournmouth earlier this year, I saw:

All 4 EAL B747-200’s (pink, blue, yellow and red)

5B-DBE, A.i.m.e.s Ltd 727
VP-BAT, A private 747SP
6V-AEF, The rep. of Senegal 727.

So as you can see not alot of Variety here, but they are aircraft that you are more unlikely to see anywhere else.

Your Flybe Bae 146 will park up at the South Terminal, possibly gates 1-10, you’ll find a parking meter just to the left of the exit gate…… it doesn’t take £2 coins!!

Yes LGW does have a gallery, opening times are at this time of the year from 8.a.m till 4.p.m.(summertime, 7am-9pm)

Theres a book shop and a cafe there and also undercover viewing in case of bad weather, which is a bit to frequent

Admission fee- £1.50

You need to head for Arrivals, the spectators entrance is just to the right of arrivals exit, you then take the lift up 2 floors.

Unfortunately parking is a bit expensive if you’re bringing your car,in that case use the long term car park if you do bring your car, it’s about 7 or 8 quid per day, the short term one’ll cost you an arm and a leg

Not of which I am aware.

Plenty of sights though – the monorail gives good apron views, as does the departure lounge in the main BA terminal.
