Spotting at Birmingham.

Tuesday I’m flying into Birmingham for work. Can someone let me know what spotting is like there? Particularly airside as it does not seem likely I will have much time landside. I don’t think I’ll bring my camera around, but if there is something special I might yet change my mind.

I also read online of a Ian Allen bookshop at the aviation experience. Having seen the airport’s website this store is not mentioned. Did it close, or is it still around?

Even with little time, walk out of the terminals towards the road exits keeping terminals close on your right and in less than 5 minutes you can walk round the fence of terminal 2 into the long stay car park. The further up the slope in the car park, and the further across you walk, the better the views get, particularly if 33 is in use.If 15 is in use you need to get photos as a/c exit the runway.

Views from airside in T1 are almost non-existant – there used to be good views but they built a Dixons and a duty free shop where the windows were… Some limited views from the airside pier but they don’t announce gates until shortly before boarding and they are not keen on people coming back from the piers. T2 has good views of some of the terminal ramp and the hangars (but useless for photos due double glass).

The Ian Allan shop closed a couple of years ago but has been replaced with another well-stocked enthusiasts store which carries books, models etc. There is also a viewing deck connected to the shop which has views over the ramps and hangars alebit also through glass – entry is free to passengers with boarding passes.
