Spotting @ Cologne/Bonn

Hey there,

I will be in Cologne for a day in late October, how busy is the airport for arrivals and departures? I know there is a viewing area at CGN, but is it any good? Does anyone know any other spotting locations around the airfield?

Thanks
FLX 🙂

Personally I am not too impressed with CGN. It has an open air terrace with high often dirty windows.

Movements can be slow. It has Germanwings, Hapag Lloyd Express and not much else really. BA, AF, KLM, LH all have a handfull of flights. Freight wise this airport has loads of flights, in particular UPS and DHL. Problem is that most of those are during the evening/night when it is too dark.

If you got a full day I’d suggest taking the train to DUS and go spotting there.

Hi mate, i webt to CGN in July, and the viewing deck is great, tho i’m afraid there is no shops there, only a drinks machine, and its out in the open so if it rains then u will be soaked!
The cargo ramp is quite far from the terminal, so a strong binoculars us needed!
Here is a photo of the view u can get from the deck 😉

Hey,

Thanks for your replies! 😀

Is there any snack/refreshment facilites at the viewing terrace? Also, is there a model shop?

FLX, The viewing deck is fine as it has a screen showing arr/dep, with good view’s of the main cargo ramp(altough some a/c may be parked head on).
One piece of advice i would give you is to walk to the car park on terminal 2 from here you can see the ramp where they park the IL76’s when they are in here, also WDL F27’s.
Traffic can be a bit slow but you never know when one of them 76’s is coming in so you may be rewarded for your patience.
Have a good day.

DTW,MSP & Florida early November for me.
