This may or may not be ‘Historic’ but this seems like a good place to start.
I visited my Mothers grave recently and as I made my way back through the graveyard I happened across this head-stone (see attached).
Does anyone have any information about this gentleman?
I realise that the name is a pretty common one but there can’t have been too many John Smiths who were a Squadron Leader and who also obtained an M.B.E.
The location is Haynes in Bedfordshire.
I know someone out there knows something
Any information would be most welcome and of great interest, thanks.

Sqn Ldr Scramble,
Try putting (5023233) into the LG. Yr man was probably Commissioned into the Tech Branch 14 Sep 65 (seniority back to 14 Aug 61). Got his ‘scraper ring’ in the half-yearly of 1972. When (??) he retired from the RAF he presumably went to BAe. His MBE came out with all the other Op CORPORATE gongs after the Falklands war. What he did with BAe don’t know
