Sqn. Ldr. C.S.M. (Scott) Anderson R.I.P. UPDATE

Late last week Sqn. Ldr. C.S.M. (Scott) Anderson passed away after a short illness at his home in Ireland. Scott served as a Pilot/Captain on Avro Shackleton’s before becoming Officer Commanding BBMF The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight from 1982 to the end of 1985 when he retired from the R.A.F. and followed another career in civil aviation. As O.C. BBMF he was also the Captain of Lancaster PA474 which he displayed with skill and panache. Many thousands of people would have seen his displays over those years and hopefully remember them fondly.

So sorry to learn of Scotts passing. He was a fine pilot and boss of BBMF after Jacko had retired. I had the pleasure of renewing his civilian instructor ratings on the flights Chipmunk and Devon at Coningsby one memorable day.

“Scott” took over as OC BBMF and bomber pilot from “Jacko” Jackson. My first flight with him was a practice display at Coningsby on the 5 May 1982. Shortly after he gave up his seat to me on Mosquito RR299 with George Aird on a flight from Coningsby to Hawarden. Another memorable flight was with 474 to Laarbruch in Germany. My last flight with him, 474, and the RAF was to Blackpool in 1983.
When he took over the flight he was a breath of fresh air and took a keen interest in his ground crew.
Not as high profile as “Jacko” but did a good safe job.
