Saw the grave today of Squadron Leader Sydney Archibald Denys Lane, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, who died on the 18th of September, 1940. He is buried in the Commonwealth War Cemetery on Cannock Chase.
The question is does anyone have any idea who he was, what branch he served with and the circumstances of his death?
Regards,

It may be worth e-mailing DoRIS at Hendon (Research@rafmuseum.org), if they don’t know, ask them to contact the AHB. The latter should be able to supply some info, although nothing too personal, to point you in the right direction for further research.

S/Ldr Lane isn’t listed in Bomber Command Losses, Fighter Command Losses or the entries in The Battle of Britain Then and Now. Whilst it’s possible he was in Coastal Command or another Command, it seems likely that this was a non-flying fatality. This, unfortunately, doesn’t really take things forward very much, but perhaps it’s helpful to at least rule some things out.
