Does anyone know what happens to the Squadron, Section or Station Silverware and memorabilia when a Squadron or Station of the RAF ceases to exist.
I recall at Station Head Quarters there being trophy cabinets and so too on the Squadrons, are these sent to the RAF Museums at Hendon or Cosford for safe keeping on the closure of such places?

I believe we transfered some silver from RAF Abingdon to RAF Benson when it closed and we moved.

On a kinda related note:
The wreck of the Prinz Eugen on the beach at Kwad is still fully fitted out. Some divers now have rather splendid dinner services with the Prinz Eugen name & KreigsMarine logo etc on everything…
However, the wreck is officially off limits so the stuff is somewhat rare, I’ve only seen a few pieces…

Wouldn’t the silverware & squadron ‘trophys’ go into the care of the Air Historical Branch, until a new squadron was reformed with that number?
Geoff.
exactly right to AHB

Indeed there must be a lot of boxes around with some very interesting silverware in, perhaps it would make an interesting exhibition at Hendon?

Thanks gents, there must be an awful amount of boxes lying around! 🙂

The retired Sqn standards are displayed in the Main College building at RAFC Cranwell. When sqns are reformed their colours move to the new Station.
I stand corrected! 😀

I think I’m correct is saying that the retired Squadron standards are returned to Bently Priory, however the silverware I’m not so sure about.

I may be wrong but I believe they are stored at the Imperial War museum. I seem to remember the 101 Sqn archives arriving when we reformed in 1984. Record books, silverware, medals, pictures etc etc. We were allowed to take what we wanted to display in the squadron and the rest was boxed up and returned.
