Sri Lankan Airlines

Hey people,

In November I flew with Sri Lankan Airlines (formally Air Lanka) from LHR to Colombo. The flight was in one of their A-340’s that had supposidly just being newly fitted out.

The seats were all different worn out fabrics, the films on your own screen where all out on video, so I’d seen half of em. The adjudstable back rests were broken on a number of the seats, but I was lucky that the flight was nearly empty, so I was able to change seats. But, on the flight back home it was the 3rd seat that i chose that had a properly functioning back support.

Have any other people flown with Sri Lankan before, or are you flying with them? If you are flying to Colombo airport I must warn you that when you are leaving the country your bags are x-rayed twice, you are searched twice, and your bags are looked through once.

P.S. some people on blind date were on our flight

I flew Sri Lankan last year LHR/CMB/LHR. The flight out was on an a340 in the old Air Lanka livery. Comming back the aircraft made two returns to Colombo as the wheels would not retract (even after the first time when the plane went for tests in the hangar !). Our party spent the whole day at Colombo airport or circling round for 2 hours i think, dumping fuel. Eventually the flight was cancelled until the next day when another aircraft comming in from Japan was due. We were all put up in the Colombo Hilton (I think that has also been bombed) and left the next day without insidence.

You may think I would not fly on them again after that but I actually thought the service/food/leg room was good and much better than Virgin on the same aircraft type. Also Sri Lanka is a beautifull country I would love to return one-day when its safer. While i was there I enquired about domestic flights on the island but the Tamil Tigers disrupted this also. This is a shame as overland travel can be very long due to the road system and slow trains

RE: Sri Lankan Airlines

Yes Sri Lankan airline has become very good since Emirates took over. But they already had a fire in there cabin recently in one of the 340s. The airline also won the best south east asian airline award.
