SriLankan Airlines will retire its 330’s and acquire more 340’s from SIA in November. This will make SriLankan an operator of only 2 types of Airbus aircraft — A340 and the A320. Plans are underway to acquire another 320 in April, bringing the total of 320’s to 3 aircraft.
The reason for the retiring A330s is due to a cost factor regarding engine overhaul. Engine overhauls on 330’s are considerably more than the 340’s. SriLankan hopes to save at least $12 million a year by getting rid of the 330’s and replacing them with 340’s.

Interesting to hear that overhauling one 330 engine is considered more expensive than overhauling two 340 engines!
