Stansted Closure?

Hi all,

upon noticing tonight Ryanair flights in and out of Leeds were running quite late i looked at a Leeds newsgroup seeing if anything was mentioned. I hear that a RYR B737 had a brake overheat problem today which lead to the closure of London Stansted airport – several FR flights diverting to Luton, and hence the schedule has been all over the shot this evening – any ideas as to what happened?

At one time there was also London Southend & London Lydd!
I wish they would target themselves on their region. Manston used to be Kent Inl. It could be Kent regional and Southend Essex regional. There are 1/2 millon people living in North Kent alone. There are virtually no passenger services from either airport, while slots even at Stansted are filling up.

It doesn’t come as much of a surprise that it should be an FR 732.

They are very uncomfortable to fly on due to the way FR fly them (in my opinion). Especially 2.5 hours to VST in Sweden!!!

I live 2 miles from Stansted and my dad works in one of the maintenance hangars there. It was a Ryanair 737-200 involved and all that I know is the brakes ceased upon landing, probably causing some uncomfort for the passengers as it stopped very quickly. The plane was then stuck on the runway, causing an hour and a halfs worth of flights being diverted ( about 30 or so in total). After the runway was re-opened there was chaos trying to get about 30-40 planes onto the runway to depart, as you can imagine

In reply to the posts about Stansted only having runway, there was massive outrage in the whole area several months ago when the government proposed 3 new runways at Stansted, making it twice the size of Heathrow. Fortunately these plans were dropped, but there are still plans for a second runway which is fine, because it means more planes to see, (possible) long haul routes and a boost for the aviation world and the economy. One thing however that is difficult for Stansted at the moment though is the low cost flights. Although it is great to have hundreds of routes served by Ryanair and Easyjet so easily accesible, it is ‘scaring’ off potential scheduled carriers, due to the fact that Stansted has a huge reputation for the ‘cheap’ flights.

lol wys.
Steve, as someone mentioned, LHR and MAN are the only main english airports that have two runways. Gatwick also has two, but one isnt used, and im not sure if it can be, can it? The two are very close together (runways), and they are parallel.
There are talks to build another 2 runways at Stansted, and possible more at Heathrow, Gatwick, and Luton!
I want them to, but then im biased because i want aviation to do well!

LHR and MAN are the only major airports in the UK with more than one runway. (several other do have smaller runways, too, but not of a length to support anything but GA)

found something…

Plane lands safety after mayday call

A Ryanair passenger plane landed safely at Stansted Airport in Essex on Monday afternoon after sending a mayday message to flight controllers.
The Boeing 737-200 with between 100 and 150 passengers and crew on board, landed at 1425 BST.

A spokesman for Stansted Airport told BBC News Online the aircrew had reported a suspected engine problem.

The plane had taken off from Luton Airport and was bound for Dublin.

No one was hurt in the incident.

Flights at Stansted were delayed until 1600 because of the unscheduled landing

it depends – if the a/c stopped on the runway at Stansted it would be the case – its only a single runway operation there – anyone heard anything yet?

I wouldn’t think a brake overheat would shut down an entire airport
