Star Alliance – bmi/SQ connection queries

Hi, I’m looking at booking a flight for an elderly relative and am a bit unsure of what to do.

She is looking to fly from Leeds Bradford to Melbourne. Currently we’re thinking LBA-LHR-SIN-MEL all booked with Singapore Airlines. However there is a Terminal change (T1-T3 at LHR), as these are all booked with SQ and are part of Star Alliance will all the bags be checked for the entire journey?

Sorry if I’m just being thick but I cant find anything at all on Singapore Airlines website wether the entire journey will be checked right through or if it requires to manually collect baggage.

Any help would be great!

Thought SIA flew direct from MAN to Changi or has this been stopped with a while?

They do, but its a very popular flight, and popular means less seats availabe, which translates to higher prices 😮

Careful with EK

Be very careful using Emirates.

They have 2 flights a day DXB-MEL. One is non-stop on the A340-500 and the second is via SIN on the B777-300.

The 777 stopping service is awful. Not only is it tiring (the journey from the UK becomes a 2-stopper) but whenever I’ve done it they had 10-abreast in economy. That is too cramped on a 777. The A340 service might be OK, but I’ve booked it twice (in 2004 and 2006) and both times my flight was cancelled and I was put on the 777.

My personal choice would be MAN-SIN-MEL on SQ. They do MAN-SIN on the 772 (and it’s 9 abreast in economy, not 10 like EK). The SIN-MEL leg will be either 777 or 744. For an aviation nut, you could always fly to SYD on the A380 and connect to MEL…

EK from NCL is a very good option, its proving to be a nice route for the North nice flight times through check to any where on the EK network. Useing the A330-200.

BD/BA have an interline baggage agreement and there is a huge amount of transfers via LHR between them both. In the summer time there can be problems becaue of the large volume going through.

EK from NCL seems like a good option.

I can only really speak from a baggage point of view as thats what I do for a living.

Thanks for the info. We are opting for EK from NCL now I think as it only requires 1 aircraft change in DXB.

Also just another thing, I was looking at flights with expedia, they were offering me bmi LBA-LHR then BA LHR-MEL via BKK/SIN however as bmi/BA are not partners would this require to physically check in again at LHR?

Certanly for an elderly person it could become quite confusing! 😮

Yes the bags will go straight through via LHR, BD/SQ are quite good at the baggage transfers between each other.

My advice is that if the relative is very elderely and travelling alone try and avoid LHR!

If all the flights have been booked together (one booking) then yes.

Just make sure they say were there final destination is!
