Hi,
I have recently decided I want to get in on the action and start taking some pictures, however I haven’t got a clue about anything.
So it’d me most appreciated if you can give a step by step guide to beggining out for someone on a tight budget, from buying the camera to touching it up with whatever software is required,
cheers,
wozza

Sorry to change the post slightly, but i`m looking to upgrade from a £90 panasonic digi, to a proper digital SLR but dont want to shell out £550 – £650, does anyone know of anything half decent in between?

Neil.
What a coincidence. My viewfinder has a knob behind it as well! Just tried it and it works.
Now, if it’s that easy to do that, why does my eye test last an hour?

Lance.
If you explain that to me in English I might be able to answer you.

Kev.. My Z1 has a large knob on the side of the viewfinder (and some may say behind it too!! :p ) which is the diopter adjuster of which he speaks.. I presume your newer version has it too??

Would a camera with diopter adjustment on the viewfinder be helpful for spectacle wearers such as yourself, Kev?
Quite a few of the more recent “prosumer” models have this facility – my Minolta A200 certainly did.

Ollie.
Don’t take comments to heart.
Wozza.
Glasses can be an issue. I wear them and find it can be easier to take them off if you take pictures using the viewfinder. I personally can’t take shots using the screen as I’m never able to judge proerly what I am looking at. I use a Minlta Z3 and the results are limited more by my lack of talent than the ability of the camera.

Ebuyer UK have a few cameras on offer, but you did say that you don’t like purchasing off the internet – you’ll probably get the best deals online nowadays. Seeing as your a beginner don’t jump in at the deep end and look at really high tech fancy cameras…what exactly is your budget?

i always use either www.amazon.com or www.dabs.co.uk

Dont forget the fantastic Fuji S5600 – great value for money, and has better “growth” capability than many others, as it allows you to fit a teleconverter (for even bigger zoom) or wide angle lense. Generally, in my experience, the Fuji range offer the greatest flexibility.
Also, you can use the Intenet to gain flexibility on pricing. Places like Jessops will price match some, if not all, Internet prices, and as the Internet can be quite a bit cheaper, its worth printing out the page. They’ll make a phone call to head office to see if the price is matcheable.
I saved over £130 on a digicam at Jessops like that. Got it same day, in my hand too.
To find the camera of your choice, do a search on Google – or even better – Froogle (same home page as Google).

Wozza, did you read my post properly? I mentioned the Z10, I’d recommend something like this which allows you to do the things I discussed. This is a digital point-and-shoot. It’s retailing at the moment between £120-150, although expect to pay more if you buy off the net. It might be out of your budget, but you’d be better off saving to buy something a little more expensive. If you go and buy a cheap £50 jobbie it’ll hardly teach you anything, as you’ll most likely only have an auto mode. Something from the Minolta range also has optical zoom, I wouldn’t try anything that only gives you digital zoom.
I wouldn’t, not unless you know what you want. Otherwise you’ll often come home with something that isn’t what they make it out to be.
You say its retailing for £120-150, do you know where, this is just about in my reach.

i personaly started off with a z10 after moving from film and now use a z-2 for its telephoto capabilerty and then a pentax optio wp for flightline walk shots or when the airplanes taxi right past me as it has a small zoom on it.

Look around in electrical shops, like Comet and Currys. They always have good stuff.

The best thing you can do is look around on the internet but if you prefer not to do that, shop around eg. Jessops or retail shops to try and find good prices for a camera which you would find suitable
By: wozza - 25th October 2005 at 15:37
Well i’m ideally looking for digital, do you know of any cheap ones?
