Hi all,
Reading the thread debating whether or not to put a Merlin in the front room, the following thoughts occured to me:
1. What a lucky bar steward.
2. Where would you be able to find such lounge furniture?
3. How much would a non-airworthy Merlin or Griffon cost?
I assume Griffons would be easier and cheaper to acquire but an extensive search of the web has revealed no such items for sale anywhere.
Can anybody point me in the right direction?
Thanks
Stuart

Hope that you can get it into your front room without removing the window. its amazing how difficult is is to get a 3 settee through a 90degree turn! I could not physically move an armchair into a room at the back of the house through the hall so it had to be taken outside over a fence and in the back door!!
Should be ok…willlet you’all know!!!!

I know of two people with Merlins displayed inside their houses, the one I have access to view was in excellent condition having only been factory test run, crated and left at a NA airport for 50 years or so. It still took a LOT of cleaning and tarting up. The next problem is a stand and then moving a VERY heavy piece of metal into your house – do not try this on floorboards!
Some careful mood lighting, a plaque to detail the history and you have a very nice conversation piece.
Thanx old chap…..I was going to spread the load over the floor boards (after checking their integrity that is! My Merlin is already clean and prettified, just needs the stand (which is from the official RR transit drawings) painting in a delicate peach white to match the walls!!!

“I would never buy engines on E-Bay”
The postage would be ridiculous.

I would never buy engines on E-Bay… I think it’s offensive for the engine itself!
Its a lump of metal, it has no feelings or thoughts and it certainly cant be offended, if it could Melvs Rearwin would never even turn over let alone start.

“Oi mate, wanna see my new Merlin? Got it on Ebay and paid it with Paypal!!” 😉
Apart for jokes, buying an engine is not a piece of cake, expecially if u can’t phisically have a glance at it, and above all because we’re talking about a relevant amount of money..Alex
Yeah, just imagine what could happen if you bought a whole airplane!

I have seen the “pair” of this merlin, it appears to be in the same condition. It is very complete, but in need of a lot of TLC. They came from a Sea Hornet PR.22, and include some of the engine cowls.

Well the Clangers did use dustbin lids as the covers for their entrances…
Stuart…if you ever wish to visit the IWM’s sections on the northside, all you have to do is ask the right people…as far as the private operators go you can at least try asking…
After most airshows we find that at least one member of the public has tried to have a good nosey…and have been known to cause some damage…

*waves back* I managed a brief peek around the corner of H5 as things were wrapping up but didn’t get any piccies sadly. As to Becka’s comment re stores access, the same goes for the off-limits H2 – if you need to view something currently out of sight just give the main number a call. Staff time permitting we can escort individuals into H2, we just can’t allow public access with the very real health and safety concerns from the displaced aircraft. You will require a valid reason other than ‘I fancy a rummage’ though…

Good idea Alex, I’ve often felt an irresistable urge to rummage around the old buildings on the other side of the road when parking over there at Duxford shows. Bet there’s some interesting stuff hidden away (hopefully not in dustbins though  ).
Thanks
Stuart
Oi! None of that! Conveniently there are elements of the local constabulary based north side… Not to mention Becka!
