A statue of Sir Frank Whittle unveiled by his son Ian Whittle in the centre of Coventry today on the centenary of his birth in the city on 1st June, 1907.
The Classic Flight Meteor NF.11 did just a single flypast during the ceremony.
Pic 1 is of the statue with Ian Whittle just after he had unveiled (the plinth)
Pic 2 is of Cllr Ken Taylor (Leader of Coventry City Council) and, behind him Ian Whittle and to IW’s left is Faith Winter – the artist who created the statue
Pic 3 is of the “Whittle Arches” erected in Coventry city centre some years ago. The statue can just be made out in the centre (against the horizontal crean facade.
The statue is a fine tribute to a great man.
Roger Smith.
