Status of the book on Roger Bushell ??

A few years ago there was a post on the Jennifer Schwartz book on the life of RAF Squardon Leader Roger Bushell and just looking around the web today and could not find out if the book had been written. My search turned up the thread on this topic. Anyone know if this book has been finished or still be worked on?. This was on my mind today as I read about the ceremonies on the BBC website from Poland in rememberance of the escapers !

By they way if you get a chance to see the marvelous documentary about SL Bushell … by his niece Lindy Wilson. By all means do so…a wonderful fim about the life of Roger Bushell.

I’m Jennifer Schwartz. I’m still working on the book, which will be a comprehensive look at Bushell’s life. In the meantime, the first book published on Roger Bushell was The Real Great Escape, by Guy Walters. I’ve never read the book and have no connection with it.

I can’t help with your question but I can add a piece of information about Bushell’s death you might find interesting. After The Battle magazine ran a piece on this a few years back but they got the location of his execution wrong. The problem was that the section of Autobahn A6 near Landstuhl they identified was not there in 1944 as the road was unfinished. In 1951/2 it was completed and ‘bent’ further south to make way for Ramstein Air Base. Part of the original A6 was then used as an emergency runway until the 1990s; the other section runs straight through the base. The western section – along which Bushell was killed – is now the access road to the US Civil Engineering unit. You can see it on Google Earth running WSW through the trees towards the A6/A62 interchange. I guess anyone with a pre-war map can figure out where the old Landstuhl road bridge used to be (that’s where the Gestapo car stopped) and come up with a pretty accurate location for his death. Just a small part of the story that deserves to be told.
