Hello everyone,
I’m looking for any information regarding a Boeing Stearman that I had the pleasure of flying in many years ago.
As part of my school’s RAF CCF, I helped marshall the aircraft flying in for the Old Hay Charity fly-in of 1997. (This included pushing Spitfire BM597 out from the hangar, which put a huge smile on my 13 yr old face! :D)
At the end of the day I was very privileged to be taken aloft by Flt Lt Charlie Brown in a yellow Boeing Stearman wearing RAF markings.
I do have a photo somewhere, but can’t seem to find it at the moment.
Can anyone shed any light on the ID of this aircraft and it’s whereabouts today?
Thanks in advance!

Hey, worry not !! The only reason I know it is FJ992 is because it is painted on large in black on yellow !!!

FJ992, of course! For some reason my fading memory was saying 7 instead of 9!

Wow!
Thanks very much both of you, that certainly looks like the one. And that is more information than I ever imagined receiving!
If I can find my photo I’ll try and get a copy uploaded.
Brings back very fond memories…
This is what makes this forum great.

PT-27 Stearman
Hello,
This Stearman would have been G-BPTB, 75-442 an A75N1 version of the Stearman which at the time was painted as a Canadian PT-27 with the military serial FJ77?. It was at that time owned by Aero Vintage and kept at Old Hay, although it spent a couple of years being worked on by Eastern Stearman at Swanton Morley, which is where I remember it being hangared in 1995-96. I’ve some photos of me ground running the aircraft during the summer of 96 at Swanton Morley. Prior to this the aircraft was regisitered as N55581 and painted in a US Navy scheme.
The aeroplane was slightly unusual in that it was one of the first examples of the Stearman in the UK to be powered with the 300 hp Lycoming R-680 engine and a constant speed propeller.
I believe this particular Stearman was sold to an owner in Belgium at the end of the 90’s.
Hope this is the information you are looking for,
Chris
