Steeple Morden

I am reading the superb book by Bud Fortier on his time with the 355th FG in WWII.
Just wondering how much of the original airfield exists…..if any, it doesnt appear on the CAA quarter mil chart (perhaps I’ve just answered my own question)!
Is the memorial easily reached?

I grew up in the village of Steeple Morden so have a lot of interest in the 355th FG and the old airfield. I started building a website dedicated to the group about a year ago. Due to other commitments, work ground to a halt but I hope to start it again sometime this year. My website building skills leave a bit to be desired but there are some pics of the memorial and one or two profiles. If you’re interested…..

Chris – it’s easy to find – the memorial is directly on the road from Steeple Morden to Littlington (name of the road is Littlington Road) – klick on link to Multimap above (post #4).

My only problem during my visit there after Legends 2003 (before having dinner at “Chequers” in Fowlmere) was that in the evenings, the sun is directly behind the memorial, thus making it rather difficult to take decent photographs.

Superb pictures Martin thankyou. I must make a poit fo visiting this memorial. Hopefully during my stay near Duxford for Flying Legends. I like to try and fit in some of the memorials after the show whilst i’m up there. Last year i only managed Fowlmere and passed Debden.

Is the 355th memorial difficult to get to?

I haven’t been around there for a few years now but as everybody’s already said, there’s virtually nothing left – apart from a magnificent memorial.
I’ve been meaning to take a pic of the memorial for years but to be going on with, here’s a very small pic lifted from http://www.uk-airshows.demon.co.uk/hunting2/airfields.htm

If you search for it on Multimap you’ll be able to see the farm roads that follow the lines of the runways/taxiways, but there’s not much left apart from that. I flew over it a few times about 20 years ago and it was almost gone then.
