Stephen Karwowski

Sorry if this brings up bad memories for some of the older ones here, but in the August 1985 edition of NZ Wings there is a photo of Stephen Grey’s Spitfire, Bearcat, Wildcat and Mustang in formation, and the caption says they have published it as a tribute to Stephen Karwowski who had apparently been killed in an accident at Wanaka that April. It says he used to fly these warbirds.

Was he a TFC pilot? And was he British? What happened in the accident at Wanaka? Was anyone else killed? What type of aircraft was the plane he was killed in? (I assume it was an aircraft, not a car).

The Gnat at the time was owned by Stephen Grey. IIRC Arnold Glass displayed it himself when he owned it.

I never realised Stephen Grey ever owned a Gnat, let alone that Gnat…. 😮
(or it’s just faded from the last 20+ years of now aged memory cells  )

Did Arnold Glass own it after Stephen Grey or the other way around…?

Gnat at a Biggin show. Looping round little puff clouds. Wonderful.
mmitch.

I well remember his Gnat (Arnold Glass’s IIRC) displays as well, and those in the Hunter.

Thanks. I guess the magazine got his name wrong in the caption.

Dave,

from what I recall he was lost flying a Pitts Special over a boy scout camp in Wanaka at the request of the aircraft’s owner, Tim Wallis, you should be able to find the accident report on the TAIC website.

This should answer some of your questions.
