dark light

Steve Young.

This is perhaps the hardest thing I’ve ever had to write. Yesterday, on Sunday 24th July 2005, one of, if not THE, nicest people I have had the pleasure to meet through the forum and in my lifetime left us.

Steve Young, a regular on these boards whom I have had the pleasure of spending many pleasant hours with over the past couple of years and whose warmth and humour always astonished me in its generosity and good feeling, was tragically killed in a road accident yesterday. Steve was 36 and was always so full of life – and so willing to share it with other people. He’d take his son Haydn to Duxford and fly him from Cambridge airport, being the dad most children must wish for. Who can forget his post about taking Haydn up in the Dragon Rapide? He was so happy to be with his partner Julie now after waiting for her for 12 years, they were planning on moving in together and getting married. At Flying Legends just a couple of weeks ago he wanted to take George, a veteran, flying – something he’d been really looking forward to since last year when he’d spent time chatting to him, and had spent ages planning. He’d arranged to hire an aircraft and take George over Mildenhall, where he’d been stationed during the war. Just giving something back to those he respected. The weather meant he couldn’t fly, but that afternoon watching the show with Julie, Haydn and George he was having a great time, as he was later, at the Red Lion.

Always ready to come up with a smile and a joke, always willing to support or lend a hand, always having time for other people. His signature on here sums Steve up so well:

Life. Live it, love it.

Goodbye Steve. You were one of the best.

Mark.

Steve Young – ‘Youngy’.

I have only just read of Steve’s untimely and tragic death. His posts were always a pleasure to read and I will miss his obvious passion for general aviation and the display scene.

Why is it that the Lord reclaims some of those He has lent us in less than the three score and ten years we might have expected…..??? So sorry.

My deepest sympathy goes out to his family and friends, so many friends.

Tears and not cheers this time,

The American ‘Flying’ magazine is hard to get hold of over here nowadays, but if you can get hold of the September 2005 issue, read ‘The Last Bax Seat’. Bax — who passed away in June — could always write very well, but this last one is particularly wonderful.

I think Steve might disagree with the Captain flying a 450 Stearman though 🙂

I’m a very recent newcomer to these forums and this is quite a shock. I remember Steve from my days with 2500 Sqn Air Training Corps at St Neots in Cambridgeshire back in the late 80’s. Steve and I were SNCO’s around the same time and I know that he went on to become a respected Cadet Warrant Officer. I recall him being a real aviation enthusiast and I do remember a few sun scorched Mildenhall airshows that we went to. Some years later I ‘bumped’ into him whilst looking for some aircraft info on the net and it was good to catch up with what he was up to. At the time I believe he was involved in a project to restore a Beaufighter.

Anyway RIP Steve & my condolences to your family and friends.

Some of you may remember that earlier this year I took Steve flying in my Chipmunk. Little did he know where I was taking him.

First stop was to Coventry to meet Rob Weaver (R.weaver). Despite the fact that Rob had done an excellent job of making some enemies on the forum, the pair of us befriended him. Rob, on being informed of the sad news, has asked me to print the following comment from him …

“I remember the first day I joined the forum with Steve always trying to help and push me and, as we grew furthter apart, Janie led us together by flying into Coverntry where I, Robert, met Steve and we became great pals ever since…

…When Janie text me today with the news I was at work and had to take myself outside for some air, I just could not take it in.

I would like to say that I dont think I have met such a nicer bloke as Steve and this is deverstating, but as you said, I am going to follow my dream and nobody will get in my way, the first thing I will think of when I reach my goal Steve is your comforting words that you have faith in me and that, as you said, that you are only what you make of yourself.

Maybe if there is an afterlife we will meet again, but whatever happens let me be the first person to say that until I had met you I NEVER KNEW WHAT A GREAT BLOKE YOU WERE and it still shocks me that I have an e-mail from you just over a week ago telling me how great things were going and how happy I was for you.

All the best Steve – why do bad things happen to good guys?

Fly high!

R.weaver”

I’ll be raising a glass to Steve tonight. Probably another to Neil while I am at it. I’d like to think they are up there somewhere discussing the finer points of the Chippy over a beer or three.

I am glad that the Chipmunk display was so well recieved. A fitting tribute to someone I wish I had known in person.

as promised, a glass has just been raised here for a fellow enthusiast, and there will be another before the night is out.

here’s to you Steve, may you be revelling in the company of the hero’s you cared so much for in that great mess room in the sky.

Steve Young, a great father, pilot, funny guy and friend to those lucky enough to know him.

The advice you gave me will not be forgotten. I will continue to take each day as it comes, as you advised me a few months ago.

This thread will surely now disappear into the bowels of the forum, and rightly so, the time has passed.

As I type this, there have been 10,121 views of it which is far above any others and over 1000 a day. If ever anybody wants to read it, to remember our friend, click on “views” and up it will come.

I’ll be surprised if another ever surpasses it.

dhfan … with no disrespect to you or Steve, there is one other with approximately twice the views.

RIP Steve … you have set one hell of an example for the rest of us.
