Probably (and I stress that I don’t know what the others were like, but can hazard a guess…) the one/s with the four veterans looked like the line up for a firing squad.
The one with Steve in has an interaction between the old and the modern world, it has people in the background so that you know the event was well attended (you would not believe the number of times I’ve used other members of the press and/or people grabbed off the street, etc, to make book signings or charity openings look like the public actually gave a toss), and it does look as though they were talking.
Some papers use group shots, some prefer close pairings, some just want a record shot. You just can’t second guess them on the fly.

Nah, I’d spent most of the week up mountains, being primal. See the way the knuckles scrape along the ground? 😉

Anyway, serious head on for a moment (blimey, that’s rare!) my appearance in the photo really shouldn’t detract from the sterling work done by von Perthes and the boys in getting four marvellous old chaps assembled to do the signing. And of course the real stars of the show, to whom we still all owe a great debt. Bob was overheard saying that he was happy to have been of a little help – a modest comment if ever there was one; he and his colleagues did all their helping sixty four years ago… 🙂

Good god. I’m glad my old Flight Commander wasn’t there to witness that. “Stand to attention properly, Young!”

Or perhaps the caption should have been “Battle of Britain veteran Bob Doe was extremely surprised to be confronted with a talking ape – look at the state of his arms!”
