Stirling BF445 lost 25th/26th February 1943

I have noticed there are a few Stirling fans on the forum, so I was wondering if somebody might be able to help me with this.

My grandfather was part of the crew of Stirling BF445 of 214 Squadron that was lost on the night of the 25th/26th February 1943 returning from ops to Nuremburg.

The aircraft crashed in woods near Thremhall Priory, Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire, on the edge of what is now Stansted Airport. At the time the airfield was under construction (by the Americans I think), and although accounts vary a little it seem they came into land, the runway was blocked by machinery, and as they tried to avoid the machinery they ended in the woods.

Anyhow, about 7-8 years ago I was carrying out some research into the crash, and I was told that when Stansted Airport was extended in the mid 1980’s (I think) parts of the aircraft that had been in the woods since the crash were recovered. I have been into the woods there a few times, and could find no evidence of a crash, so it would seem anything that had been there is now gone and under the car parks, however I was wondering if anybody might know what happened to the items that were recovered in the 80’s.

I was told they had been taken away, possibly by a local museum, however it would be nice to find out if they still exist somewhere.

I did try there a few years back, but they hadn’t heard anything about Stirling parts. I had been keen to visit Earls Colne as my grandfather had been based there at the end of the war (from Jan 45) when he was the Gunnery Leader with 296 Squadron.

However I was able to have a flying lesson at the airfield so I am now able to say I have flown out of one of my Grandfathers wartime bases! I have also flown into Stansted quite a few times, and its always interesting to think that my grandfathers aircraft was the first to “land” at the airport. if only they had waited until it had been finished.
