Stirling Bomber Prang Tangmere Nov 1942…

Gents,

Long shot here.

Looking for a photo of a pranged Short Stirling Mk.I of No.218 (Gold Coast) Squadron flown by the squadron C/O W/Cdr O A Morris. Crashed on return from a Nickle op to Toulon November 8th 1942.

Aircraft ( W7612 HA:T) hit trees on approach due to two defective engines, the aircraft was totally destroyed, thankfully without the crew badly hurt.

Any photo’s of details via Tangmere Station records most welcome.

TIA

Steve

Hi Andy,

Thank you for looking, how very strange. From the report I have the Stirling crashed just inside the boundary of the airfield. Plus it was skippered by a wing commander! Given this I was hoping some fighter jock would have had his camera out and snapped a pic or two. I assume no luck Andy on this front either?

Cheers

Steve

Nothing I’m afraid. Just an account of Rhubarbs flown by 165 Sqn, 616 Sqn and 131 Sqn, Fw 190 damaged and two Spits collided over Somme Estuary. No mention of your Stirling. Checked day before and days afters. Nothing I’m afraid.

Nothing either in the end of moth summary. Frustratingly, lots of mentions in December of Lancasters, Halifaxes and Wellingtons landing

No. I had forgotten. I will do it now before I get stuck into the joys of writing up a Bibliography. Stand by.

Have you checked the Tangmere ORB? If not, I will dig it out in a moment.

Hi Andy,

Any luck with this?

Hi Andy,

No I contacted the Tangmere Museum, sadly without any success. I presumed they checked?

Any bit of info welcome. I would have thought a bloody big Stirling dropping in ( literally ) would have made a mention, even to the fighter boys !

Tease !

I am visiting a relative of the pilot this month and have a chance to copy his log books, all 5 of them! He ended up a group captain retiring in the late 50’s.

Thanks again Andy.

No luck yet. Another two boxes when I get the time.

That said, I don’t think it is ‘your’ Stirling. But you never know!

No, I haven’t forgotten.

I’m afraid it will involve going through a huge box of un-indexed or filed images, and apart from the fact that I need t retrieve that from the back of the loft I wont have time to look through them, anyway, until after this coming Monday.

Keep reminding me, though.

Dear Andy,

Just a gentle nudge.

Kind regards as always.

Hi Andy,

Thank you. I hope you will not mind a gentle nudge in a few weeks.

I have tried the Tangmere museum without luck sadly, it appears what I had in the way of info they didn’t !

Cheerio
